CHESS IRELAND Jun-Sep 1998 (all games, ratings, clubs, comprehensive tournament report)
ICU web site Tournament archive (totals)
Newspapers
  • Sunday Independent (Michael Hennigan):
  • "1998 championship draws top players", August 16, 1998 p. 50 (report, top six scores, under 2100 prize, annotation of B. Fitzpatrick - Kennedy, round 7)
Databases The ICU games archive, up to the end of 2017, had only 64 of the 88 games. BritBase had all 88, as had Big Database 2012.

Notes
Key In "Pairings & results":
  • "age" denotes the player's age on his or her birthday that year (even if the birthday fell after the event);
  • "x-ch" denotes former Irish champions;
  • "ol" denotes members of the previous Olympiad team (Elista 1998).
  • "ch#" denotes the number of championships the player played in, including this one
Débuts and final appearances Seven players made their irish championship débuts: Danielle Collins, Michael Dooley, Brian Fitzpatrick, Colm Fitzpatrick, Adam Kelly, John P. A. Kennedy, and Stephen Scannell. Of these, Collins, Colm Fitzpatrick, and Kelly, along with Danny Roberts, never played again.
Ratings Ratings are all taken from John Loughran's tournament report. FIDE ratings (and titles) match those on the July 1998 list.
Discrepancies The CHESS IRELAND games file gives O'Connell-Heidenfeld (round 9) as 1-0, but the tournament report gave a Black win, as do the ICU games archive, BritBase, and Big Database 2012.
Records Only one player has ever scored 100% in winning the title of Irish champion (excluding championships decided by match): Paddy Kennedy in 1949. Colm Daly fell ½ point short of equalling the record, denied only by Mel Ó Cinnéide—nephew of Paddy Kennedy.
