    Ó CINNÉIDE, Mel, b. Cork?, * 1965

born in Cork – yes – also born Mel Kennedy (unofficial name change? circa 1983 and not even sure about that… I’d like to see his passport! be sure to pass on my comments to Mel!)

    McMahon Daire FM (2012?)

O’ Shaughnessy Connor (Irish olympiad team and Euro championship teams (you need to check the dates)

McCarthy Anthony (Irish Olympiad team circa 1980)

O’ Reilly Edward (Irish Olympiad team circa 1984)

    • Sean Coffey says:

Thanks Martin! I found a clipping recently of the Irish Schools Interpronvicial from 1980 or 1981, which I played in for Leinster and “Mel Kennedy” indeed played for Munster. I’m not sure he counts as a name change, though, on the basis that it’s just the same name as Gaeilge.

I played the last three players you mention many times. Must update the page (the problem is finding the time).

  2. Mel Ó Cinnéide says:

Not that it matters much, but this is a site about Irish chess history and my name change will confuse anyone looking at old tournament results, so here’s what happened. My name is Mel Ó Cinnéide, and always has been — it’s what’s on my birth cert, passport etc. As a kid I often called myself Mel Kennedy, and that’s the name I used when I first played competitive chess. A few years living in the Netherlands in the late 1980s convinced me that using two names was a bad idea, and it also meant that my Irish and FIDE chess ratings were under different names! So sometime in the early 1990s I bit the bullet and started using my proper name in the Irish chess world as well.

  3. John McMahon says:

    Hi there compilers.
    Congrats on your comprehensive work.
My entry (John McMahon) is a bit understated.

Glorney Cup junior international 1956/57/58. Runner-up 1961 Irish Championship in Galway .
Armstrong Cup with Kevin Barry CC 1956 to 1976. Heidenfeld Trophy with Lucan CC 2005 – 2016.

  4. Guy Lyons says:

Looks as if my humble contribution to irish tournament chess has been forgotten+
Played for DAlkey , Collegians, sandymount then left ireland pennyless , in the early 1980,s
Joe noone seems to be missing .I can also remember conor BArrington i think he played for
    DUblin chess club.
Hard work deserves praise , with minimal moaning from the probably deserved omission

    Keep up this good work.

  5. Andrew Thomson died on 12 July 2022 aged 90. RIP

  6. Alan Templeton Ludgate says:

My entry should include olympiads 1984, 1986, 1988 (or 1984-88 if you prefer).
Also European Team Champ. 1989 and an EEC Team Champ (I forget the year – it was in Teeside). Thanks.
