2 Simuls I know of as I moved bits in both of them
Shirov in Trinity College 21-Jun-93. About 30 boards (Stephen Brady won among others I think)
Danny King in DIT Kevin St. 22-Apr-1998. About 30 boards again, think a few draws against him

  3. Sean Coffey says:

Thanks Eric, I’ve added those. I think I have a few issues of the ICJ from 1998, must look to see if the King event is mentioned.

  6. Brendan Lyons says:

    Hi Sean,

Michael Stean played two simuls in the late 70’s I think, One in Trinity and one in Dundrum. I’ll try and dig out some info. I have some older Irish chess Journals and “Ficheall Ficheal” that I’ll try and scan at some stage. I wonder if it is worth cnvasing some of the elder statesmen of Irish chess, who might have magazines etc.

  7. Brendan Lyons says:

The mag I think was called “Ficheall”

  8. Sean Coffey says:

    Hi Brendan,

I remember Stean’s visit to Dundrum; I think was probably 1976. On my scoresheet I wrote for the Event “Simul (by him)”, to the amusement of the Dundrum elders. (I lost.)

It would be very interesting to scan all the old Irish chess magazines and put them on line. I think the late 70’s edition was “Fiacla Fichille”. The National Library has quite a few issues, a gift of Kevin O’Connell I believe. The issues I saw were very hard to copy, unfortunately.

  9. Damian Artt says:

The records of Korchnoi’s simul losses in Newtownards in 1981 are incorrect. Korchnoi lost a number of games that night, including one to me.

  10. David McAlister says:

    Hi Damien

Thanks for the correction. Can you remember any of the other winners? Another player, now long retired from competitive chess, has also got in touch. He thought he might have beaten Korchnoi but admitted to being very unsure of this.

So it looks like I’ll have to do some more checking on this simul. Any former Newtownards players out there who might be able to help?

  11. Damian Artt says:

I recall at least 3 winners that night, and I think I recall a young lad by the name of Forsman being another winner.

  12. David McAlister says:

Thanks again Damien. I wonder if Forsman is Des Forson.

  13. Damian Artt says:

    Yes! That’s the name!

  14. Jonathan O'Connor says:

I played against Korchnoi in the Dublin simul. He destroyed me. It started out as 6.Bg5 Najdorf, but Korchnoi played 7.Qf3 instead of 7.f4 and after 7…h6 8.Bxf6 Qxf6 9.Qxf6 gxf6 he ground me down in an opposite coloured bishop endgame. I remember asking Paul Delaney where I went wrong, and he couldn’t help me. Sadly, I have lost the scoresheet.

My other memory of the event was Korchnoi’s immense will to win. After I resigned, I asked him to sign his book “Chess is my Life”, and he was incredibly irritated that I should do so.

  15. Paul Cassidy says:

You are missing two important simultaneous. Alexine played here either in the late 1920s or early 1930s. The correspondence in relation to the visit is in the Dublin Chess Club which, as the then Librarian of that club, I had it for many years. I have now passed it to Jonathan O’Connor who will be able to confirm dates etc.

Dr Max Euwe, the ex World Champion, gave a simultaneous here in the late 1960s I think. I drew with him.

The best simultaneous player I met was Paul Keres. I lost to him in 90 moves during his visit here. As a matter of fact I missed a win in the endgame. There were only two players left- Ray Cassidy and myself- so we had to move instanter. I saw the winning move but had not time to think and chose another. C’est la vie!

  16. Ciaran Quinn says:

David Bronstein gave a simul in Dublin in the 1980s – there is a picture on the ICU site http://www.icu.ie/images/display.php?id=368

  17. Philip Reilly says:

    Hi folks,
I remember photos of Efim Geller in the Dublin Chess club many years ago playing against some of our lot. This is confirmed in the following link http://www.icu.ie/icj/icj_1012.pdf where Robert Pye says ‘I think one of my best games was against Yefim Geller
during a simultaneous exhibition he gave in Dublin in
    May, 1982. ‘
    My twopence worth,
    Philip Reilly

    Hi All!

St.Michael’s Chess Club will have the pleasure to get lessons & simultaneous from another titled international player : IM Lucian Filip on May 22nd in CIE Club (Carey Rd.,Limerick). All welcome!

  21. John Healy says:

I might add my own name to the list of Nigel Short’s victims in his 2012 Dublin simul. I played a QGD Tarrasch only to later learn that Short is a leading expert in it!

  22. Kevin Burke says:

For what it’s worth, I was one of those who took on Danny King in 1998. Can’t remember who else played, though I think there was a couple of others from UCD (my club at the time)

I recall being quite pleased that I’d set a trap for him, but of course he saw it, and the move turned out to have no other merits than the trap; I lost soon after…

  23. Mel Ó Cinnéide says:

Re the 1998 simul by Danny King in D.I.T., he also drew an exhibition game against me with live pieces! It’s impossible to play when your pieces are gazing up at you!

I lost to Jonathan Mestel in a simul in Cork in about 1980. Perhaps someone else has more details of this?

The UCC club organised Hans Ree to give a simul in the mid-1980s. I thought he visited Dublin on this trip as well?

    • Sean Coffey says:

Thanks! I hadn’t heard of these extra games or the simul against Mestel at all.

There are many extra simuls I haven’t gotten around to including yet, for various reasons. I didn’t know of Ree’s visit to Cork but knew of the Dublin one (and even have a game from it). Others include Bronstein, Geller (I think), Miles, and (one that will require time to do justice to) the simuls by Capablanca in 1919.

  24. David McAlister says:

A short article on page 7 of the Irish Times for Friday 22nd February 1980 states that Mestel would be playing “40 opponents simultaneously next Sunday afternoon beginning at 2.30 p.m. in Colaiste Spioroid Naoimh, Wilton, Cork.”

The same article also reports on a more exotic simul with an Irish connection – Eamonn Keogh had “recently tackled 40 opponents simultaneously in an exhibition in Bahrain.” Keogh’s score was +29 =6 -5.

This may be of interest actually – http://stbenilduschessclub.wordpress.com/2013/11/28/bodley-a-armstrong-mariusz-stun-wicklow-phibsboro-dad/

Though only a club event, it may be worthy of inclusion. The player in question was Anatol Lokasto FM, a leading junior coach in Poland now rated 2224 but dormant on the FIDE site for the past few years. His son, Mariusz, plays for St Benildus and arranged the simul. The opponents ranged from 1600s down to 800s. 17 games in total; Anatol won all bar one – his son!

Anatol has played on the other side of simuls before, beating Tal in 1965 and drawing with Smyslov. He has 17 (!) IM norms, but somehow never managed to get his rating above 2400 to get the title!

  26. kevin burke says:

Impressive! I didn’t spot that; thanks.

(I even got the final result wrong when posting here!)

  27. Stephen Morris says:

My game against Shirov in the 1993 30-board simul was the last to finish. He resigned in a losing Bishop and pawn ending. I think he lost about 5 games on the night. I got the impression he was a bit unhappy with his performance. His play was razor sharp as I recall and I think he was number 3 in the world at the time.

There was another TCD simul by Short in the eighties as well as one by Murray Chandler and there was indeed a simul by Hans Ree. I can dig out the dates if you like.

Also, Andrew Martin gave a simul in Dublin in 1991 I think.

Dates for Leonard Barden, 23/3/1974 and B. H. Wood, 30/3/1974
