1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 d5 4. e3 More usual and better is 4. cxd5 and 4... Nxd5 5. e4. 4... Bg7 5. Qb3 dxc4 6. Bxc4 O-O 7. Bd2 Nc6 8. Be2 Anticipating ... Na5, but it would have been better to retreat the Queen to c2. 9. d5 with e4 to follow was worth considering. Losing what Tarrasch calls “the Minor Exchange”. 10. Qc2 still seems best. 10... Nd3+ 11. Bxd3 Qxd3 12. O-O-O Be6 13. Qc2 Qc4 Black avoids the exchange of Queens while pressing his attack. White is in rather a bad way. He cannot play 15. Kb1 on account of 15... c5 and ... Bf5. The text move is probably the best at his disposal. 15... c5 16. Qb3 Qa6 17. Ndb5 Be6 18. Qa3 Obviously a lost move. 18... Qb6 19. Qa4 a6 20. Na3 Nd5 21. Nc4 21. Nab1 here would have been a more satisfactory defence. Or 22. Nxd5 b5 23. Qa5 bxc4 24. Nc3. Or if (22. Nxd5 b5 23. Qa5) 23... Bxd5 24. Nb6. Or 24. Nc6. There is no hope for White after the text move. Black presses him relentlessly to the inevitable finish. 24... Bf5 25. Qb7 Nd3+ 26. Kb1 Nf2+ 27. Ka1 Nxh1 28. Qxa7 Rxa7 29. Rxh1 Rd7 30. Bc1 b4 31. axb4 cxb4 32. Na2 Rd5 33. Nb3 Bc2 34. e4 Rb5 35.
