  • Heidenfeld 1-0 McDaid (1): "Heidenfeld was quickly on the attack against F. (sic) McDaid (Connacht) in the first round, gaining a pawn early on which culminated in the latter's resignation on the 35th move of a Modern Benoni" (Irish Independent)
  • Reilly 1-0 Mulholland (2): 'Reilly was in brilliant form in his second-round game against N. Mulholland (Ulster) whom he forced to resign on the 29th move of an Alekhine defence' (Irish Independent)
  • Reilly 1-0 Coldrick (3): "Art Coldrick put up a tremendous struggle against Reilly after losing a pawn on the 15th move, but the former champion utilised his advantage to win on the 40th move of an English opening" (Irish Press, July 14 p. 18)

  • MacGrillen 1-0 O'Brien (5): Irregular opening, 33 moves, MacGrillen won Q for R one move before the finish (Irish Press)
  • Heidenfeld 1-0 Mulholland (6): Caro-Kann, 25 moves (Cork Examiner, July 17 p. 12); Caro-Kann, 27 moves (Evening Herald, July 17 p. 16); 'Heidenfeld played excellent attacking chess against Mulholland to clinch the issue on the 27th move of a Caro-Kann Defence' (Irish Press, July 17 p. 20); 'Heidenfeld in his game against Mulholland was having it rather hard when Mulholland left a Rook en prise, which Heidenfeld gladly accepted and his opponent resigned next move' (Irish Times, July 17 p. 5) (note difference in description)

  • Coldrick ½-½ Heidenfeld (7): "Coldrick won a pawn in the middle game of a French defence but he failed to make much use of this advantage and Heidenfeld had little difficulty in holding his opponent to a draw" (Irish Press, July 18 p. 23); drawn "on the 64th move of a French defence after a 6½-hour struggle. Coldrick tried desperately to convert his advantage of a pawn won in the middle game, but Heidenfeld easily held him. (Irish Times, July 18 p. 6)
  • MacGrillen 1-0 McDaid (7): MacGrillen "availed of weak development moves by his opponent to obtain a strong centre and won on the 60th move of an English opening" (irish Independent, July 18 p. 15); MacGrillen "obtained a strong attack ... and won on the 28th move of an English opening" (Irish Press); "McDaid allowed his opponent to obtain a strong attack after 28 moves of an English opening through bad development, and was forced to resign on the 60th move" (Irish Times) (note contradictory accounts)
  • O'Brien ½-½ Reilly (7): Budapest defense, 36 moves (Irish Independent, Irish Press, Irish Times)
Format 'One leading Irish player suggested to me that once it became obvious that both the championship and open would be sub-standard contests, the officials should have taken a drastic decision and combined the two tournaments in a single Swiss event, awarding the Irish championship title to the leading eligible player and giving everyone a chance of winning a cash prize.'—J.   • McDaid was variously given as "D. McDaid" and "F. McDaid"
  • O'Brien was variously given as "S. B. O'Brien", "W. B. O'Brien", and "W. R. O'Brien".
