Irish Senior Championship 2004 - Round 7

Today's results

Gawain Jones continues his good run in this event by beating John Joyce today. As you are probably aware, Gawain can win the event but he can't win the title of Irish Champion. That will go to the highest placed Irish player on Sunday evening. (He will also win the right to a place on the Irish Olympiad team later this year )

Irish Championship (7), 2004
[Gerry Graham and Fritz 8]

I should really apologise to Paul Wallace for publishing this game, it certainly doesn't show him at his best but it does show a really "improved" Rory Quinn, from Ennis, is a player not to be taken lightly by anyone. 1.e4 Nc6 2.Nf3 d5 3.exd5 Qxd5 4.Nc3 Qa5 5.d4 Bg4 6.Bb5 e6 7.h3 Bh5 8.g4 Bg6 9.Ne5 Bb4 10.Bxc6+ bxc6 11.Bd2 Bxc3 12.Bxc3 Qd5 13.f3 Ne7 14.Bb4 Rb8 15.c4 Qd8 16.Bxe7?

A mistake, but not a fatal one, better would have been [16.Qd2] 16...Qxe7 17.Nxc6?? This is the fatal one, I'm afraid. [Fritz suggests 17.Qd2 as being the best continuation, protecting b2 and getting ready to answer Qh4+ with Qf2.] 17...Qh4+ 18.Ke2? This is the nail in the coffin for White, he might have made things a little more difficult for Rory by playing [18.Kf1 Rxb2 19.Qe1] 18...Rxb2+ 19.Ke3 Qf2+ 20.Kf4 Re2 21.Re1 Qh2+! An accurate move. 22.Kg5 h6+ 23.Kh4 Qf2# 0-1

Tomorrow we can look forward to:
