D80 Sligo Spring Tournament Major 2022 (3.7) 2022.04.30

1. e4 e6 2. Nf3 d5 3. e5 c5 4. d4 Nc6 5. Nc3 cxd4 6. Nb5 Qb6 7. Nbxd4 f6 8. Be3 Qxb2 9. Nb5

I wasn't sure about this but he took me out of preparation early so I was just trying to play logically.

9... Bb4+ 10. Bd2

This is a bad move but 10. Ke2 did occur to me but I thought it dubious.. but it may in fact have been close to equality

10... Bxd2+

Same thing, Kd2 did occur to me but I just felt like it's too dubious.

11. Nxd2 Qxe5+ 12. Be2 a6 13. Na3 Nd4 14. Rb1 Qd6 15. Qc1

I could just resigned here, but I wanted to fight on so that's what I did. He could have taken my knight but he didn't see it ( 15... Qxa3 16. Qxa3 then 16... Nxc2+).

15... Ne7 16. c4 O-O 17. c5 Qe5 18. Qd1 Ng6 19. g3 Rb8 20. Nc2

Still trying to hang on

20... Qxe2+ 21. Qxe2 Nxe2 22. Kxe2 Bd7 23. h4 Bc6 24. f3 Rbd8 25. h5 Ne5 26. Nd4 Rfe8 27. h6 Nd7 28. hxg7 Nxc5 29. Rh6 Rd7 30. Rxf6 Rxg7 31. Kf2 Rg6 32. Rxg6+ hxg6 33. Nxc6 bxc6 34. Rb6 Rc8 35. f4 a5 36. Ke3 a4 37. Kd4 Nd7 38. Ra6 c5+ 39. Kc3 Kf7 40. Rxa4 Rh8

Now after all that fighting it's a draw but it's hard to play for white.

41. Ra7 Ke7 42. Nb3

This lost me the game but if I played Nf3 it's still a draw.

42... Kd6 43. Ra6+ Ke7 44. Ra7 Rc8 45. a4 Kd6 46. a5 Rc6 47. Ra8 d4+ 48. Kc4 e5 49. a6 Nb6+

0-1

Event information: Tournament {“Polly is from my Former Club the Curragh. A Very Talented young junior...... Unfortunatley she erred in the opening and I had a won game fairly quickly....... My brain switched off then and I got complacent......Polly played some great moves to get back into the game... I was lucky to get the win in the end..... ”—Niall O'Shea.
