Débuts and final appearances Cormac Brady, Michael Gaffney, John Nicholson, Eddie O'Connor, Christy O'Sullivan, and David Salter made their Irish championship débuts. Michael Crowe, Gaffney, O'Sullivan, Pádraig Ó Tuathail, Willie Rea, and Skelton never played again.

  • ICU ratings are from the 1983 list, except for O'Brien's and Skelton's, which were given on Alan Ludgate scoresheets (O'Brien's also appeared in the Evening Echo, July 26, 1983 p. 13). (Note: though the list was not published until September 1983 (in the first issue of Fiacla Fichille following the event, the ratings were available during the event, as evidenced by Alan Ludgate's scoresheets.)

Errata
  • The Fiacla Fichille report gave Dunne and Short as defending co-champions, but in fact they had been co-champions in 1981; for this event, John Delaney was the defending champion, having won on tie-break over Dunne and Short in 1982
  • The Connaught Telegraph report on July 30 gave Gerard McDonnell as finishing on 5, versus the 4½ given here
