Sandymount Chess Club
Founded by Brendan Byrne and Andy Bolger around 1969 -1970.They met in Sandymount High School. Tim Walsh was one of the earliest members as he transferred from the school club.(On his 1st time in the school club Tim drew with the teacher, as Tim had already been playing for a few years in Kevin Barry.)
Other members were: Ray Mansfield, O’Hara twins, Paul Stanley, Kevin Burke, Jack Parker. Later members were John Quigley, Gerry O’Connell & Joe Noone. (And I think Bernard Palmer) Plus a few others whose names I have forgotten.
It closed in 1986.
Gerry, Joe, Kevin & John are still playing chess. (Gerry & Kevin with St Benildus). They might be able to give you details about the later years, as I left Ireland in 1982 & returned in 1986. I have Gerry’s phone number & work e-mail.
As one of the forgotten names, I thought I would add some other names to your list from mostly the 70s. I have most of my score cards from those days including a couple against yourself. Some of the players were only there for a while but for some reason the cards only included an initial of the player, so I may have the first name wrong in some cases. Frank Byrne, Jim Gannon, James Kavanagh, Rory McGinley, Gerry Smith, Willie Sheridan, P. O’Dowd, Danny and John O’Sullivan, David Lillis, Paddy Staunton, J. O’Leary, J. O’Neil, Maurice d’Alton, Derek Davis, Richard Redmond, N. O’Reilly and Paddy Lyons. Bernard Palmer was definitely a member. A number of the members, including myself came through the school where Ray Mansfield was the Maths teacher.
